Ranking the best NFL Combine events from first to worst

Finally, there’s something to talk about . . . kind of. The NFL combine is here to fill our football fix. There’s a lot of potential draftees working out. They are going to run fast. They are going to jump high. They will even lift weights. It’s all here for us. Let’s rank the best activities and events.

The rankings are not in the order of which is most important. Some teams value the three-cone-drill more than they value the forty. Some teams are going to look at the broad jump more than they’d look at vertical leap. The ranking is just about discussion, fun, and what normal fans will go out and discuss when the numbers come in.

40-yard dash

This is the most talked about event and it sits at the top of our list. Everyone wants to know a prospects 40-yard dash time. Maybe the splits actually mean more than the final result, but the 40-yard dash is simple. It’s just a player running. Finding out how fast someone is harkens back to the days of race during recess in school. We care about how fast a quarterback is. We definitely care about the times of running backs and receivers. We even care about how fast linemen can run 40 yards even though that rarely happens. The 40-yard dash wins.

The vertical leap

Running and jumping. It’s so simple but so awesome. It’s cool to see giant men jump higher than we think they can, mostly because it doesn’t make sense. Plus, the vertical leap has that cool tool for measurement. Watching people hit the pegs as hard as they can is pretty cool to watch.

Broad Jump

This one is all about vertical explosion and is like the vertical leap but about how far the player can jump standing still. I feel like this is the NFL version of watching the long jump in the Olympics.

Three-Cone Drill

Ever try to do a three-done drill successfully? It is not easy. The way these guys move so quickly without losing their balance is pretty impressive. The Patriots love the three-cone drill. It’s not as fun as the drills above it though.

Shuttle run

The shuttle run is the three-cone drill but in a straight line. It’s fine I guess.

Bench Press

If the bench press was about how much weight was put on the bench press then it would be ranked much higher. We can’t even ask “how much can you bench?” when it comes to the NFL draft. We can only ask how many times can you bench . . . which is still cool, but not as cool as the sheer weight.
